# What are model weights?

Model weights are the billions of learned numbers that constitute a trained model: the artifact itself. Whoever holds the weights controls the model. With closed models you rent access to someone else’s weights; with open-weight models, fine-tuned on your data, the weights can be yours outright.

Weight ownership is a balance-sheet question: a fine-tuned model trained on years of your decisions is an asset that appreciates with use, but only if you hold the weights.
